A History of Ingenuity
The Alliance for People with Disabilities is the result of over 30 years of dedicated service to our disabled brothers and sisters by the organization’s founder, Russell
Attema.
In collaboration with Hal O’Leary, who serves as Alliance advisory board member and Recreation Program director for the National Sports Center for the Disabled at Winter Park, Colorado, Mr. Attema has worked to advance and empower the lives of people with disabilities.
In the early 1970s, Mr. Attema and Mr. O’Leary joined forces to pioneer the original concept of snow skiing for those with disabilities. With duct tape and skis, crutches and creativity they created the first out riggers for amputees and the age of disabled sports pushed off.
The Alliance was created with the same creativity and ingenuity. Today, a very important and growing segment of society is ready to push into the forefront of history.
Now is the time to create a unification of interest and a new collaboration of people and energy nationwide that will benefit all people with disabilities.
